COMING TO CUBA?

 CONNECTING WITH CUBANS.

Heading to the destination you have dreamed of visiting?  The one you’ve spent countless hours reading about and imagining wandering the streets, eating the local cuisine, and of course seeing real Cuba?
For thousands like you, traveling is about experiencing the rich culture and doing your best to blend into the local scene. You can  claim victory when someone asks you for directions, a local starts speaking to you in the local language or you find your way to a spot where you are clearly the only tourist in sight.

The key to experiencing the authentic side of Cuba is finding ways to interact and get advice from those living and working here.  Below are a few techniques to interact with locals in Cuba
Instead of asking the hotel concierge for recommendations once you are here, try asking as many thing as possible by email,  so instead of going to that bar filled with other tourists, you can get directed to the one a little bit outside of tourist town with a little more local flavor if you ask to the right persons

ACCOMMODATION
Picking the right hotel or B&B, private apartment , or hostel before you arrive can also be a great way to interact with locals.  By staying away from the big name hotels and finding the small bed and breakfast type places, you will have a true ally for doing cool stuff when you arrive, or giving recommendations or arranging unique experiences

NO PLACE LIKE HOME.

Think outside of the big box chains when picking a place to rest your head. It can save you money and provide a better local experience.
Consider to find lodging in a neighborhood you actually want to stay in  and find apartments if you don’t need as much room, but still want to be in the city center with a kitchen.
All these options usually have kitchen access and that’s a huge cost savings if you don’t mind making a few of your meals, or even just making something to go.
With a big group, renting an apartment or house is more economical than getting multiple hotels rooms and way more group friendly.
With all options, you’ll have a local person to get great local tips and perhaps even take you around or make you a local meal. Win-win.

...................................

IMAGINE having a Cuban to navigate you away from the worn down tourist routes and towards the local, up and coming spots. IMAGINE unique travel memories in unique places. IMAGINE a platform where you can choose the locals to plan this experience based on your budget, interests, and timeframe.
Skip the tour package.  Immerse yourself into the true experience of a place. Be independent.
.................

TRAVELING OFF THE BEATEN PATH

No travel secrets exist anymore, right?  On the contrary!  Put yourself in the right place with your eyes wide open and you’ll uncover new places.

1.  PREFERRED ENCOUNTERS.
Determine what types of experiences you want.  Not specific ones per se, but decide if you’re looking to interact with locals, nature, food, art, history, etc and how.  Let us guide you where you choose to travel.
2.  REAL NEIGHBORHOODS.
Want to find neighborhoods or areas that look interesting to you?  Search for blogs or local articles about up and coming neighborhoods.  Look at the restaurants, shops in the area and see if it matches your expectations. Sometimes having locals as your neighbors is great, but it’s not for everybody.
3.  LOCAL LODGING.
Today many chain hotels are offering local,  but these options are still limited. Instead look into  inns, B&Bs, apartments, or independent hotels to stay centrally located in a neighborhood and perfect for those interested in interacting with people in the temporary home, hostels. It  is a  great option to meet people and have a built-in community of local guides when you arrive. Otherwise, the other options will still provide more authentic recommendations than the typical concierge.
6.
email  your lodging host and ask about some local things that they or their friends do.  This is invaluable and can give you some direction to research what you want to do upon arrival and at very least the types of places you want to be. If you’re staying in a chain hotel, the front desk is representing the brand and therefore less likely to give you unfiltered answers ..  They might tell you what they think the average touristwill want, but who’s average?

8.  READ REVIEWS.This doesn’t mean just pulling up TripAdvisor (usually wrong regarding Cuba)  and going to the highest rated restaurants, hotels, coffee shops, etc.
During travel:
9.  TALK or WRITE TO LOCALS.
One option is to write to me  and asking what types of things you shouldn’t miss or where to eat.  This is especially helpful if you’re in a place where locals don’t speak your language. Since you did your research and put yourself where locals hang out, try to make some friends and indulge your
curiosity and ask questions.  Maybe ask about daily life, the political situation, what to drink or eat and of course where they recommend to check out.
This can lead to great things and sometimes even an offer to join them for the day.
10.  RELAX AND BE FLEXIBLE.
Try to temper your natural fear of missing out. Just go with the flow, be positive and say ‘yes’ a lot.  You may have a list of things to do and see, but you might find yourself with an opportunity that’s better. Go with it and see what happens!!

CUBA VACATIONS, MAKING FRIENDS

Cuba is a unique country and therefore a vacation destination like no other. The political situation for the last fifty years has made the island one of the few places in the world without mass marketing and mass media. It is a place which can confound and delight in equal measure and well worth a visit before things change. Cuba vacations are easy to plan using the internet as there is now tons of information about facilities on the island.

There are two ways to visit Cuba; either by staying at one of the many all-inclusive resorts or as an independent traveler. The resorts are generally clustered along the north coast of the island to the east of Havana. There is some top class accommodation available and some great deals. The beaches are really phenomenal and the water is crystal clear so they are great for a beach style vacation. Despite the fact that Cuba is a communist country you will not want for anything. However the resorts do not give you much opportunity to really get to know the island and its unique way of life.

Travelling independently to Cuba is fairly easy and extremely interesting. There are some lovely hotels with great facilities or you can really get to meet the locals by staying in a family house called a casa particular. What started out as a clandestine practice of residents renting rooms to visitors has become regulated by the state so it is perfectly safe to use these houses. They vary is style and comfort from basic to really beautiful as most Cuban homes are filled with antique furniture. Food is available at state run restaurants or you can often make arrangements with the people you are staying with. There are also licensed private restaurants called paladares where you can get meals of a high standard.

The island of Cuba is amazingly varied and the vacation possibilities are many. There are great cities, small towns each with a different character, national parks, stunning Caribbean beaches and world class dive sites. There are some unique ecosystems and wildlife species such as the smallest bird in the world, the Bee Hummingbird.

The capital Havana is unlike any other capital in the world. Prepare to be amazed by the architecture, culture and the people. There is a lot to see in the city and some of the highlights include the Cigar Factory, the Museum of the Revolution, the Malecon and the old part of the city, Havana Vieja. Cuban music is appreciated all over the world and you will hear it everywhere. A night out at the capital inevitably incorporates rum, dancing, live music and some new Cuban friends.

Santiago is the second city situated at the opposite end of the island from the capital and very different from Havana. The culture is more African and this is the home of the Cuban carnival. It is packed out for carnival week so if you want to go make sure to get reservations in plenty of time.

Transport can be annoyingly slow in Cuba, however it is the slow pace of life which many visitors fall in love with. Drivers can hire cars to get around more easily. There are a number of companies in Havana and Santiago which provide cars of a very good standard. You could even hire one of the old American classics.

Cuba Vacations are full of sun, beaches, friendly people and fascinating experience you will not get anywhere else. Check out the details on the internet to see what you want to do in Cuba.

HAVANA, an invitation from a Cuban

It is one invitation to discover the most bright and radiant capital of the Americas.

In a resemblance to the Paris and New York of today, the Havana of the fifties laughed at the most seen places of the United States of the after war. There were the latest fashionable bars, the most luxury hotels, and an exuberant challenging architecture, in the oldest commercial place of the Caribbean.
What's left from all that? The history is turning in 180 degrees after a period of fifty years, changing into vestiges the luxury city from before. It's an adaptation or a transformation all about?

Despite the abandoned monuments, the atmosphere is intact. Havana Connaisseur presents, on the backside of the contemporary history and through many forms of current activities, what conforms the face of the Havana of today. Both a melancholic and cheerfulness mixture appears combined with epicurean pleasures. The Well being style of the Caribbean.

Old Havana has many sights and sounds to captivate the inquisitive traveller. These include Plaza de Armas  (the oldest square in Havana and the site of the city’s foundation), El Templete (the oldest neo-classical building in Havana),  La Catedral San Cristobal de la Habana and the Museo de la Revolucion. However for most visitors who join us on our Havana city tour it is the excitement of  being part of the commotion of daily street-life is the number one highlight. So, put your walking shoes on and  soak up the atmosphere of this lively, excitable city.

LOCAL GUIDE IN HAVANA. WALKING TOURS & VINTAGE CARS.

My name is HUmberto Linares.
I am a professor of Spanish language
and Cuban History in Havana. Teaching is my passion.
Since some years now I make city tours
in summary: A historian, guide, The passion for my country and my
city is what identify me. I will teach and show the visitors about
little streets, the details, the colors and great History of Havana.
My tours are walking tours and also in vintage cars,
discovering fantastic streets, churches,
museums, fabulous and old buildings, but also extraordinary bars and
the rebirth of the Havana's restaurants and one of the most interesting
things happening in Havana: paladars or private restaurants. On
request we can also  go out of the tourist's path.
The tours  in the old part of the city are mostly historical, and about
arts (architecture and museums).
for those interested in sociaI  fields I actively work with several
generations of Cubans and I know the reality and beauty of my country
in depth.
We  make the first part from a square to square as the  city grew, the
streets communicating the squares, and important streets. It also include iconic restaurants and bars.
the average tour in old Havana lasts 3 hours.
then, and on request I can organize a tour in a vintage car (clasic
car) to other parts of the city. Havana from the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s
and 1950s, can be fascinating as well.
this tour usually lasts one hour.

Hopefully it is a good suggetion for you.
thank you for your attention and it is important you can help to make
